Webinar: Personnel Dosimetry – a first step to radiation protection of the staff
Masterclass: Personnel Dosimetry – two steps ahead
by Markus Borowski & Martin Fiebich, Germany
In Europe, millions of people are obliged to participate in occupational dosimetry surveillance. For most of them the annual collective doses are low, but for dedicated groups or individuals, the surveillance and following interventions on protective measures, make a real difference. In this first part of the Webinar / Masterclass pair we will start dealing with fundamental concepts of personal dosimetry surveillance. Why do we care about exposures to the staff, and what are risks from occupational exposure compared to everyday risks? From this on, relevant protective and measurement quantities are presented in the webinar, as well as dosimeter types in use. Working principles and pros and cons of different types are explained. At the end of the webinar we will have a closer look at clinical exposure situations, where staff typically faces doses below 1 mSv per year. Different options to treat personnel at these workplaces, and get most for the effort paid, will be presented and discussed.
Dr. Markus Borowski is head of the medical physics division at the Institute of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Klinikum Braunschweig. He is member of several medical authorities and strongly engaged in different committees of the German standardization committee (NAR). He is member of the committee A4 “Radiation Protection technology” of the German Commission on Radiological Protection as well as delegate in the Group of Experts referred to in Article 31 of the Euratom Treaty. Dr. Martin Fiebich is Professor at the Institute of Medical Physics and Radiation Protection at the University of Applied Sciences in Giessen/Germany. He specializes in dose optimization for patients and staff, the development of new methods in quality assurance, and dosimetry in X-ray diagnostics. He has been a member of Working Committee AA6 "Imaging acquisition systems" of the German standardization committee (NAR) since 2005 and is chairman of this committee since 2010.
