Cancer Care Alberta and the University of Calgary Department of Oncology is seeking a Medical Physics leader with a proven record of clinical and academic leadership to be our next Director of Medical Physics.

Committed to the highest clinical and academic performance and standards, and leveraging highly developed interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills, the Medical Physics Director will provide both Academic and Clinical leadership to a high performing team of clinical and academic medical physics staff within the Calgary Radiation Medicine team. Leading the team through a once-in-a-career opportunity to be part of bringing the second largest Cancer Facility in North America to clinical operation will set the stage and conditions for provincial, national, and international excellence in Medical Physics practice and research.

Scheduled to open to the public in 2023/2024, the 1.4-billion-dollar Calgary Cancer Centre (CCC) will be a leading health care facility, academic, and research centre providing cancer services for Calgary, Southern Alberta, and specialty provincial programs. Equipped with state of the art technology including 2 MR-Linacs, 2 dedicated MRs and a PET–CT the Calgary Cancer Centre will have full integration of MR technology in precision radiation medicine and care. An academic and research-intensive environment supported by vibrant graduate and residency programs and opportunities to explore commercialization are strongly supported. In addition, a 250 million dollar philanthropic campaign to support research, treatment and care has been launched at OwnCancer.ca.

Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, Tom Baker Cancer Centre/CCC and academically to the Department Head of Oncology, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for Medical Physics, as well as direct the associated research and educational mandates of the team in collaboration with the Academic Department of Oncology.

Leading a diverse team of professional and technical staff, you are responsible for managing all resources required to maintain services and integrate research and academic programs within the clinical service program. With high functioning direct reports whose primary focus is direct patient care, you will support a team-centered and accountable approach to practice with a focus on key performance indicators and quality of care. Some medical physicists will hold Faculty appointments for research, teaching and graduate supervision with the University of Calgary requiring you to work collaboratively through the Department of Oncology, University of Calgary to maintain academic requirements (Fulltime and Adjunct appointments).

Responsible for all operational needs of the Medical Physics department and team ensuring high quality patient care and access, you will also anticipate challenges, healthcare trends and increasing demands for services while developing an agile strategy capable of maintaining and enhancing patient care today and into the future. You will be accountable for the oversight, development and integration of programs that support a comprehensive medical physics team within clinical operations. This leadership role is a change agent and demands a high level of internal and external collaboration with Cancer Care Alberta (CCA) leaders across the province.
