Prof. John Stephen Clifton (UK, IPEM) 1998

B.Sc.(Hons. Physics). M.Sc.(Radiation Physics). A.R.C.P, F.lnst.P, F.I.P.E.M. Emeritus Professor of Physics as Applied to Medicine -University College London.
John started his career as a medical radiation physicist at the Royal South Hants Hospital in Southampton in 1955.
In 1957 he moved to the Medical Physics Department of University College Hospital and Medical School (UCHMS), London, as a Senior Physicist, with responsibility for radiation therapy and nuclear medicine.
He became Head of Department in 1962 and managed its evolution from a unit concerned primarily with clinical radiation physics to a broadly based Department engaged in research, development, and teaching across an extensive range of medical physics and clinical engineering activities.
He was appointed Professor of Medical Physics at University College London in 1987, and Joel Professor of Physics as Applied to Medicine in the University of London in 1990. He was the Honorary Editor of Physics in Medicine and Biology, from 1979 to 83.
As President of the Hospital Physicist's Association ( now the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine) from 1976 to 78, he initiated the formation of EFOMP, and was the first President of the Federation from 1980 to 1984.
He is currently assembling an historical archive of the of the activities of the Federation.
