EFOMP at MPEC 2012, Oxford, 10th – 12th September.

The annual conference of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine was this year combined with their Biennial Radiotherapy Physics Conference.

As well as the usual topics expected in a medical physics conference, such as Dosimetry, Radiation Protection and Optimisation, Imaging, and Radiotherapy IPEM also had 4 sessions devoted to presentations by Trainees, Future Visions, and a session on Planning and Training the Future Workforce.

EFOMP, the Institute of Physics and the British Nuclear Medicine Society also contributed sessions.

The EFOMP session was on Medical Physics in Europe. The session was introduced and chaired by Peter Sharp who gave an introduction on the role of EFOMP in Europe. Stelios Christofides gave a general overview of the guidelines on the medical physics expert and this was followed by presentations by Claire Hardiman and Carmel Caruana on registration and on the education and training of medical physicists and MPEs, respectively.

Jeff Hand outlined the new EFOMP policy document on the role of the medical physicist in MR safety.

The session finished with a report by Stephen Evans on the results of the EC funded study looking at MPE staffing levels.
